How to Cook Goat in a Crockpot

Goat might not be as common as beef or chicken but it is equally great for making crockpot recipes. Goats have been used for their meat, milk, skins, and hair all over the world for centuries and there are more than three hundred goat breeds.

This animal is closely related to the sheep. The meat tastes like spring lamb meat and the word "mutton" is used to describe both sheep and goat meat in India, Pakistan and on some Caribbean islands. What you will need:

1 goat leg, de-boned or folded
3 red potatoes
3 cloves garlic
3 carrots

8 shallots

How to make it:

Put the water, wine, goat and tomato paste in your crockpot and stir the mixture. Cook it for four hours on low. Peel and chop the carrots, potatoes, garlic, and shallots and add these to the pot as well as the salt and black pepper. Cook for another three hours or until the meat is falling off the bone. Serve with couscous or rice.

Recipe for Goat in Red Wine

You can adapt this recipe if you have other vegetables to use up. Carrots, mushrooms, zucchini, eggplant, and squash are all good. The goat will come out very tender and moist and you can serve this taste recipe with mashed potatoes or rice. If you want the gravy to be thicker, you can stir a teaspoon of cornstarch into the beef stock before you add it to the crockpot.

What you will need:

1 lb goat stew meat
1/2 bottle red wine
3 bay leaves
6 oz tomato paste
6 peeled, chopped carrots
1 chopped onion
1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme
14 oz beef stock
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper

How to make it:

Put the vegetables and herbs in the bottom of the crockpot, then pour in the liquids and tomato paste and stir the mixture well. Add the goat and make sure it is covered in liquid.

Add the salt and pepper, cover the crockpot and cook the stew on high for three hours, then low for two hours. Alternatively, you can cook it on low for eight hours or nine if you are using frozen meat.

1 pound beef sirloin tips, trimmed and cubed

½ cup diced button mushrooms

1 cup green peas

1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup

¼ cup apple juice

¼ cup beef broth

½ teaspoon ground black pepper

½ teaspoon Italian seasoning

¼ teaspoon salt

Place beef, mushrooms and peas in a medium crockpot that is at least 2 quarts in size. In a small bowl, stir together soup, juice, broth, pepper, Italian seasoning and salt. Pour mixture into crockpot. Mix well. Cover crockpot with lid, and turn heat to low. Cook for 11 hours. Remove lid, stir well and serve.

Ingredients You Will Need:

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

1 pound beef stew meat, cubed

1 cup diced red onion

1 cup chopped carrots

½ cup diced celery

1 10-ounce can condensed tomato soup

3 cups beef broth

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon minced garlic

½ teaspoon ground black pepper

½ teaspoon cornstarch

Place oil in a large skillet, and turn heat to medium. When oil is hot, add cubed beef to skillet. Brown beef for 3 minutes. Add onions to skillet, and cook beef and onions for 3 minutes. Make sure beef is cooked. Drain half of the fat out of the pan, and discard. Pour browned beef, onions and remaining drippings in a large crockpot, at least 3 quarts size.

Add carrots and celery to the crockpot. In a medium bowl, stir together the soup, broth, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, pepper and cornstarch. Pour mixture into crockpot. Mix well. Cover crockpot with lid, and turn heat to low. Cook for 10 to 12 hours. Remove lid, stir well and serve.

Crockpot Beef Curry Recipe

Ingredients You Will Need:

2 cups cauliflower florets

½ cup uncooked white rice

½ cup raisins

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon yellow curry powder

1 teaspoon minced garlic

¼ teaspoon ground black pepper

¼ teaspoon salt

1 pound beef stewing steak, cubed

1 cup beef broth

¼ cup water

Place cauliflower, rice and raisins in a medium crockpot, at least 2 quarts in size. Combine flour, curry, garlic, pepper and salt together in a large plastic bag. Place cubed meat in bag. Shake bag, and cover meat with mixture. Pour beef and remaining mixture into crockpot. Pour beef broth and water into crockpot. Mix well. Cover crockpot with lid, and turn heat to low. Cook for 10 hours. Remove lid, stir and serve.

3 Crockpot Sausage Recipes

Mustard Flavored Sausages In Beer

What You Need:

10 3/4 oz can condensed cream of celery soup
10 3/4 oz can condensed cheddar cheese soup

1 cup frozen carrots and peas
1 cup chopped onion

How To Make It:

Layer a third of the potatoes in a four quart crockpot, then a third of the meat, a third of the onion and on top of that put a third of the cheese soup. Repeat the same layers twice more.

Pour in the celery soup and then cover the slow cooker and cook for eight to ten hours on low or four to five hours on high. Thaw the vegetables under warm running water twenty minutes before the dish is done, then add them to the slow cooker and keep cooking the recipe for fifteen more minutes.

Herby Italian Sausages

You can serve this recipe as a sauce for buns or pasta or top it with cheese and broil. This recipe has a beautiful Italian flavor and makes enough to serve four people. You can serve a tasty green salad on the side if you like.

5 Italian sausages
1 chopped green bell pepper

Crockpot Spaghetti Sauce

I love spaghetti with meat sauce. The best thing about the sauce is that the more it cooks the better it gets. I used to make spaghetti sauce only on the weekend because I would start it in the morning and then watch it simmer until early evening. Recently I came across a meat sauce formula that combines my popular ingredients but cooks in a crockpot.

Crockpot Spaghetti Sauce

Meat Casseroles

Ingredients

1/2  pound Italian sausage

1/2  pound ground beef

1 1/2 medium onions, chopped (1 1/4 cups)

1 cup sliced mushrooms

3 cloves garlic, finely chopped

1 can (14 1/2 ounces) diced tomatoes, undrained

1 can (14 ounces) tomato sauce

1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste

1 Tbsp. Dried basil leaves

1 1/2 Tsp. Dried oregano leaves

1 1/2 Tsp. sugar

1/2 Tsp. Salt

1/4 Tsp. pepper

1/4 Tsp. Crushed red pepper

Directions

In a large skillet, cook sausage, ground beef, onions, mushrooms, and garlic over medium heat for about 10 minutes or until meat is no longer pink. Stir occasionally. Drain.

Spoon sausage and beef blend into 5 quart crockpot. Add remaining ingredients and stir to mix.

Cover and cook on low heat setting for 8 to 9 hours.  

This formula make 12 1/2 cup servings.

Quick Tips

Coat crockpot with cooking spray for easier cleanup.

Use pre-cut onions and minced garlic.

Use pre-sliced mushrooms in a jar or icy mushrooms.

Spaghetti and meat sauce is a extra meal at my house. We like to pair it with a fresh orchad salad made with romaine lettuce and crunchy orchad vegetables (carrots, radishes, and celery) and garlic bread. Since this formula serves 12,  I ordinarily take some to work the next day and share it with my staff.

Brisket in the Crockpot

One of my daughter's favorite meats is a brisket. She has loved brisket since she was a young child. When I was growing up, my mother used to make brisket in the oven, throwing a little bit of this and a little bit of that into the pot. While my daughter loved the end result it was near impossible for me to duplicate the recipe.

Today, when I make a brisket I almost always use my crockpot. A brisket is a cut of meat that needs to cook for several hours anyway, so why not cook it in the crockpot where it will stay moist and absorb all of the flavors I add in?

One of the sauces I create involves ketchup, Worchestshire sauce and onion soup mix. I mix them all together and then instead of adding water, I add either Coke or 7-Up, depending on what I have in the house. Adding the soda adds a bit of a sweet taste to the ketchup mixture. I place the meat on the bottom and then add the sauces on top. I then set the crockpot on low and cook up to eight hours.

Another recipe I love is a cranberry brisket. This recipe requires a little prep work before you can put the ingredients into the crockpot. Sautee two onions chopped, two stalks of celery chopped, two carrots chopped and four cloves of garlic minced. Once soft, add in one can of whole berry cranberry sauce. Mix and remove from heat. Depending on the size of my brisket, I'll sometimes brown the brisket before putting it into the crockpot. If the brisket is small in size, about 3 pounds or less, I'll skip the browning process. Place the brisket in the crockpot, add the sauce and then set on low for up to eight hours.

Both of these recipes are great when I'm working a full day. I plug in the crockpot before leaving and the meat is tender and ready when I get home from work. We serve the brisket with either rice or potatoes and a hot vegetable. This makes a great meal that is very simple to prepare.

How to Make Shredded Barbecue Pork

Start with a four pound pork roast. Place it in your crockpot with a sliced onion and sufficient water to fill 2/3 of the slow cooker. Season with salt and pepper, Cover and cook pork on low for 8 to 10 hours.

While the pork roast is cooking, get ready this homemade barbecue sauce, a popular method of my grandmother's.

Ingredients for Barbecue Sauce

2 tsp margarine
1 medium onion chopped
1 Tbs Worcheshire sauce
2 Tbs vinegar
4 Tbs brown sugar
4 Tbs lemon juice
1 tsp dry mustard
1 c catsup

Melt margarine or butter over low heat. Add other ingredients and blend.

Once you've made your barbecue sauce, refrigerate until the meat is done.

When your pork roast is finished cooking, take it out of the slow cooker and throw away the water and onions.

Let the pork cook and then, using a fork, pull the meat apart. Once you've shredded all the meat, return it to the crockpot. Add the homemade barbecue sauce and mix wholly with the shredded pork.

Cook on medium for 1-3 hours, or until the onions are soft.

Serve the shredded barbecued pork on a large, whole wheat bun with baked beans and a salad for a unblemished supper idea.

How to Make a Tasty Pot Roast in Your Crockpot

Roasting in the crockpot is a great way to get a tender, juicy roast without a lot of effort. There is no basting at all; just put in the ingredients and let your crockpot do its thing. The juices in the food simply baste your roast during the long, slow cooking process so your roast turns out moist and tender.

Use anything vegetables you have on hand, but potatoes and carrots are traditional. Feel free to use parsnips, rutabagas, turnips or anything root vegetables you prefer. Root vegetables work indubitably well in the crockpot, turning out perfectly cooked every time. They also pick up all the flavors of your roast since they go on the bottom of the pot.

Recipe for Beef Pot Roast

What You Need

1 (2-1/2 pound) boneless beef chuck roast 1 Tablespoon cooking oil 1 pound whole new potatoes, 3 medium potatoes, or 3 medium sweet potatoes 8 carrots or parsnips, cut into 1 inch pieces 3 small onions, cut into wedges 3/4 cup water 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 2 teaspoons instant beef bouillon 1 teaspoon dried basil or oregano, crushed 1/2 cup cold water 1/4 cup all-purpose flour Salt and pepper

How to Make It

Trim the fat from the roast. Cut up the roast if indispensable to help it fit in your crockpot. Brown the roast on all sides in a large skillet. Drain fat.

If you are using new potatoes, peel a narrow strip from the center of each potato. If you are using larger potatoes or sweet potatoes, peel them and quarter them. Place the potatoes, root vegetables, and onions in the crockpot. Position the meat on top of the vegetables.

Combine the water, Worcestershire sauce, bouillon, and herbs in a small bowl. Pour over the top of the meat and vegetables.

Cover and set your crockpot on low for 10 to 12 hours. If you cannot wait that long, put it on high for 5 to 6 hours.

After cooking, move the meat and vegetables to a serving platter, saving the juices. Cover the meat to keep it hot.

Pour the juices into a glass measuring cup and take off the fat. Make gravy with 1-1/2 cup of juices. Add water if there are not enough. Pour the juices into a sauce pan. Consolidate the cold water with the flour and stir into the juices. Cook and stir until the gravy thickens and bubbles. Season gravy to taste with salt and pepper. Serve with meat and vegetables.

How to make it:

When I tell citizen I make lasagna in my crockpot, they always look at me and ask if I'm sure. They can't believe that their crockpot can be used to make this extraordinary dish.

This in effect began as an experiment and has since become a family favorite.

Meat Casseroles

I begin with ground turkey. The packages of turkey are just over a pound. I brown the meat with chopped onion. If you like other seasonings with the meat, this is the time to add them in. Once the meat is brown I add in one jar of Prego sauce (don't throw away the jar). You can use any brand of sauce or even make your own.

Once the meat is done, it's time to generate the lasagna casserole. I spoon a bit of the meat sauce on the bottom of the crockpot. I then use quarterly lasagna noodles. Do not buy the type that are no boil. You want quarterly lasagna noodles. I generously coat the noodles with ricotta cheese, then break to fit the crockpot. I cover the bottom of the crockpot, over the sauce with the noodles. Place the noodles cheese side up.

I chop up one head of cauliflower and one head of broccoli. I dice a few zucchini. I also wash half a bag of spinach leaves. I put a compassionate layer of the mixed vegetables on top of the noodles. I top this with Italian blend cheese. Just generously sprinkle on top of the vegetables.

Repeat layers until the crockpot is full. My crockpot is smaller, so I only have two layers of vegetables. End your layering with ricotta covered noodles on top.

Remember that empty jar you saved after browning the meat. Put a quarter cup of water in the jar and shake to generate a very runny tomato sauce. Just before plugging in the crockpot, pour the water over the top of the top of casserole.

Cook on high for four hours. After four hours, I took off the lid and pushed the top noodles down to Ant. Eject a bit of the liquid. I turned it down to low and cooked one more hour.

We are not a mushroom eating family. If your family likes mushrooms, try adding those in, either instead of one of the other vegetables or in increasing to the others.

My family enjoys the taste of the Italian blend cheese. I know others prefer a Parmesan cheese. Try Italian blend in the casserole and then shredded Parmesan on the top.

You can also try this formula with an Alfredo sauce instead of a tomato sauce. As I mentioned, the first time I made this dish, it was an experiment. So try your own experimenting to find the right compound of ingredients for your family.

Hamburger Meat in the Crockpot

I happen to be a ground meat lover. While today I use mostly ground turkey, I still love my ground meat recipes. I own a cookbook called 365 Ways to Cook Hamburger. I love that cookbook. When I began using my crockpot more often, I began to look for ways I could convert many of my favorite recipes to crockpot recipes.

Since I began using ground turkey, one of my favorite dishes is meatloaf. I rotate making it in the oven and making it in the crockpot.

I use between two and two and a half pounds of ground turkey. Many people mix ground meats. I just use the turkey. Your consistency will be different if you use ground lamb, ground pork or ground beef. All are fine to use, you'll just taste the difference. The ground turkey doesn't always hold together from the crockpot, but the taste is wonderful.

In a large bowl, mix the ground meat with all of the following:

1 egg
1/4 cup ketchup
1/4 cup water
1 tablespoon Worchester sauce
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 cup breadcrumbs
Diced onion to taste - My daughter does not like real onion so I use a few spoons of onion flakes.

After mixing together, shape into a ball that will fit into your crockpot. As I mentioned above, this does tend to fall apart a bit, so line your crockpot with foil. Fit the ball into the foil and cover. Cook on low about eight hours.

We will often add a quarter cup to a half cup of Parmesan cheese to the mixture. We love the taste of the cheese in the meatloaf.

When I was a child growing up, my mom used to make sweet and sour meatballs that we all begged her to make often. It was the simplest of recipes. She combined grape jelly and chili sauce to make the sauce. Then she'd boil it down twice before serving. I found a way to convert this recipe to my crockpot.

Since I start with ground turkey, I add breadcrumbs to the meat to help hold it together. I use between one and two pounds of meat, usually closer to the two pound mark. In a bowl, I mix a sixteen ounce jar of grape jelly and a twelve ounce bottle of chili sauce. I form the meat balls and roll them in the mixture. Then I place the meatballs in to the crockpot. Once I've coated the last meatball, I pour the sauce into the crockpot, over the meatballs. Cover and cook on low six to eight hours. These are wonderful over brown rice. The sauce soaks in the rice and it's just delicious.
